ABATE Purposes
To represent the industrial viewpoint on energy and utility issues before all appropriate governmental bodies and other pertinent organizations which affect energy pricing, reliability and terms and conditions of service in Michigan.

ABATE is an association of major energy consuming corporations who have joined together to solve problems related to the supply of electric power and transportation of natural gas to industrial facilities located in the State of Michigan. Our common characteristic is that the supply of energy is essential to our manufacturing capabilities and the cost of energy is an important element in our production cost and therefore has a direct impact on our competitiveness in the global marketplace. ABATE is:

  • The only representative of major industrial utility customers before the Michigan Public Service Commission, the Michigan Legislature, FERC, the courts and the public.
  • A successful industry trade organization that has effectively argued for legislative, regulatory and court decisions which have saved its members millions of dollars from the time of its initial organization in 1981 to date.
  • A resource and focal point for identifying problems and finding solutions.
  • A cost-effective investment that enables companies to participate in issues and cases which a single company could not afford on its own.

What ABATE does

  • ABATE is a persistent and active voice at the Michigan Public Service Commission which sets energy rates, the terms and conditions of service and ultimately affects the reliability and availability of power.
  • ABATE represents members’ interests in front of the Michigan Legislature in order to make sure that any legislation passed is balanced and leads to affordable and reliable energy.
  • ABATE also participates in cases before the Michigan Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court in order to protect the interests of industrial customers, when warranted.
  • ABATE communicates its views to regulators, government members, and the public through press releases, meetings, and through its lobbyist.

What does ABATE stand for?

  • Utility rates should be based upon a utility’s cost of providing service to each class.
  • A cost of service allocation methodology should emphasize the cost of providing service at a utility’s time of peak demand and not overall energy consumption in order to avoid costly new generation.
  • Utility customers should be given the proper price signals to allow them to understand that consumption will have a different cost during certain times in the day and season.
  • Utilities should be given the opportunity to earn a fair rate of return.
  • Policies must be developed that will promote reliability of supply and safety.
  • Any existing rates subsidies should be eliminated.
