Energy is a major expense for industries doing business in Michigan . While ABATE members recognize that public utilities should earn a reasonable return on their investment, Michigan industries should not pay more for the same energy than its counterparts in most other states and Canada. ABATE works to correct this inequity at the state and federal levels. ABATE participates in gas and electric utility cases, supporting the basing of rates which force industrial customers to pay extra to subsidize the utility rates that other customer classes pay. ABATE supports policies that encourage competition among energy suppliers, and promotes and protects open access to competitive suppliers of gas and electricity to industrial customers. ANNUAL DUES ABATE's annual dues are based upon the aggregate amount the member paid for both gas and electric utility service in Michigan during the last calendar year. Utility Expenditures Dues
ABATE's participation in regulatory proceedings is funded on a case-by-case basis. For those cases in which the ABATE Steering Committee decides to participate, members receive a notice explaining the reasons for involvement. Any member participating in a case will be billed monthly for its share of the costs incurred upon each member's proportion of energy consumption for the utility involved as compared with the energy consumption of all other members participating in the case. An "Opt-Out" form will be issued for each case allowing individual members to decide if they wish to participate in funding a particular case. If a member does not wish to fund the case, they simply return the Opt-Out form and will incur no responsibility for funding the case.
